World No. 1 female golfer Yani Tseng of Taiwan shot a 4-under par 68 in the final round of the State Farm Classic June 12 to win the Ladies Professional Golf Association tournament in Springfield, Illinois. Tseng took home US$255,000 in prize money for her 21-under par 267 performance over four rounds. It marks her second LPGA title of the year.
The Chinese Taipei men’s basketball team beat Mongolia 85-71 June 11 in Nanjing, mainland China, to finish atop Group B and enter the semifinals at the 2011 East Asian Basketball Championship. The victory, coupled with mainland China’s defeat of Hong Kong to also enter the final four, secured a birth for Taiwan in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship to be held in Wuhan, mainland China, in September.
The Legislative Yuan passed an additional budget June 10 to fund a pay increase of 3 percent for civil servants, military personnel and schoolteachers, as well as retired government workers who had opted for monthly pensions. Some 1.25 million current and retired government employees will benefit from the salary hike set to take effect next month. (SB)
